80 Ainslie Street is one of many projects that are a part of Williamsburg’s redevelopment from an industrial neighborhood into a residential one. The former warehouses at this site were demolished for this new mixed-use building designed by DXA Studio and developed by Parkview Management. This 4-story development provides a total of 16 apartment units, lobby, recreational terrace, laundry room, bicycle storage space, and parking for the residents.

Büro Ehring worked on the exterior full height signature staircase, exterior storefront feature panels, entrance canopy, and interior feature panels. Working with DXA, we were able to continue the perforated metal of the signature staircase from the interior to the exterior, while utilizing the perforations in a structurally expressive way. Rounds of stress-based perforation pattern analysis ended up with a custom pattern that combined the architectural “X” pattern with a hole density and diameter which expressed the strength and stiffness requirements of the stair design.
