In response to the 2013 earthquake and typhoon that devastated the Philippines, the Active School was designed to innovate local construction methods and provide new classroom spaces for the 15,000+ students who lost their classrooms from the natural disaster. As part of the rebuilding process, actLAB, a New York-based collaborative architecture design group, is working to reconstruct two schools in the towns of Maribojoc and Loon.

Additional Information
The prototype of the classroom is designed to redefine the basic unit of a classroom as a space of learning both formal and vocational education and a venue for community development. The scope of work included structural and materials engineering services for the school prototype, utilizing locally grown bamboo as the primary structural material.
