The ‘Hidden Stadium’ was selected as the winner of the 2019 ‘Staydium’ Ideas Competition by Uni for the city of Montpellier, France. Viewing from the outside, the stadium will appear to be a series of masses overlapping one another as the project seeks to blend more naturally with the scale of Montpellier and be less imposing of typical stadium designs. As the visitors approach the stadium and enter through these masses, they will be surprised to find a stadium carved into the ground. The masses on the inside respond directly to the ‘void’ of the stadium.’ When the stadium is in use, the curved screens that carve the massings will turn on, revealing a bowl-like atmosphere hidden behind translucent metal screens.

Additional Information
Büro Ehring provides full architectural design and concept, and structural engineering design for the project. The stadium’s massing is made up of five (5) building blocks that surround a football field. The concept of the stadium plays on the notions of inside/outside and hide/seek.
