Maya Lin Studio’s design for the renovation and expansion of the existing Neilson Library on Smith College’s campus seeks to re-imagine the library as an intellectual commons at the heart of the college. The design replaces the earlier 1962 and 1982 additions with new “jewel box” wings that offer open, inviting, light-filled spaces to enrich the interior learning environment while respecting the existing building’s historic significance.
